How does hoodia work

by admin on September 19, 2007

Hoodia is referred to a cactus like plant which is prevalent in the Kalahari Desert of
South Africa. It was first practiced by the Sans Bushmen tribes living in Africa. This
plant was used as an apetite suppressor while they went for hunting rides. But the
question that arises is the working of this plant. The pharmaceutical company known as
Phytopharm are into the research of hoodia species known as hoodia gondonii. As the
initial phase has been finished they have come with the result that these plants are safe to
be used for reducing the weight.

The working of hoodia gordonii is in relation to that of the hypothalamus of the brain
which is known as the connection between the two portions of the brain. Another relation
is with that of the apetite. This invention was made by the Brown University. The tribes
who discovered the plant does not about the science behind its work on the body in
reducing the body weight and its effect on the brain. All that they knew was that the hoodia plants just veiled both hunger and thirst.

The experts at first did not show much interest in understanding about how does hoodia work? But they were interested in the valuation of the bush food and to detect the presence of toxins and to check whether they could be consumed. The first trial was done in animals and they lost weight. Through this way the active ingredient known as P 57 was identified.

The most important study was based on the fact that does hoodia work and not about the how does hoodia work?  Phytopharm was the pharmaceutical industry which undertook the research of the product. Various experiments were conducted by administering the active ingredient. Later after almost fifteen days trial period it was known that the calories intake was reduced thus reducing the body weight.

It was only in the year 2004 which is very recently that a study done at the Brown Medical School revealed how does Hoodia work? In the study they isolated the P57 molecule from the hoodia gordonii. The study was conducted by experimenting on rats injected with the active ingredient of hoodia gordonii known as P57. From the observation it is stated that the portion of the brain which is responsible for the feelings such as thirst, hunger and many other temporarily blocks the sensitivity of hunger and thirst areas. It also passes a sense of fullness due to the increase in ATP which is caused by hoodia gordonii. This is to normally low down when the intake of food is reduced.
This is the best explanation of how does hoodia work?
